In case you are an artist reading this and would like to apply to a fun group exhibition, we are accepting submissions for the fourth Catalyst Small Works Show we are curating at Catalyst Gallery in Beacon for December. The guidelines are on our website. Most media, $25/3 images, 16" max size, $600 price limit, deadline Nov 13. This is always a popular and well-attended show with over 100 pieces and at least 50 artists. Opening reception is Dec 3 and it will run through Jan 8.

artist panel at HVCCA

I will be moderating an artist panel today 2-4 pm at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill. The topic is how both up-and-coming and established artists can promote their work effectively. The panel will share their personal techniques for getting their work into the public eye, as well as ways to secure gallery representation.
This event is part of the yearlong programming in conjunction with the current WORD show, in which I and the panelists have work, on view through Dec 17.
Between you and me, I will admit I do not have extensive experience moderating panels, but I do have four years' experience of owning Catalyst Gallery and, say, ten 'serious' years of working as an artist. I suppose putting the word serious in quotes immediately makes it seem less serious, but it's also part of the point- I always know there's more I can and should do. There's a topic with no neat conclusion.

hat tip

I painted this wood hat cutout for an upcoming fundraising auction for the Beacon Historical Society. (Hats because of Beacon's past hat-making industry.)  Hats by many local artists are on display through October at Beacon Bath and Bubble, followed by the auction Nov 5 at the Howland Center.
I built up the surface of my hat with lines and color as I went, leaving some early layers and painting over most areas: improvising but with a structure/idea in mind, like building a place in the community over time.
