Our 5th annual Catalyst Small Works Show just opened this past Saturday at Catalyst Gallery in Beacon! The show is curated from a national open call for submissions and we organize, install and manage the exhibition at our gallery. There are about 60 artists (including myself) and over 130 works in a variety of media, all within 16" and priced under $500. There is also a selection of unframed prints for sale by the artists, plus cards, gifts, calendars (ok just my calendar) and more. It is always a lot of labor but enough fun and fulfillment to keep us doing it each year. We sell lots of work every time, and the thrill of making an artist's first or fiftieth sale, of showing a range of artists from just-emerging to well-established, and writing out checks to artists, never wanes for me! Do projects like this distract me for a while from making new work? Yes. But it satisfies another important aspect of my life as an artist. I could not curate, install, and sit a show every month, but when I do, I enjoy the process of organizing something like this and creating an art-filled space that brings people pleasure. More than I thought I would, and even though it's tiring, I enjoy talking to artists and visitors. And I'm proud of the gallery, which is wrapping up its fifth year of consistently good, diverse exhibitions and events. So come visit this month, it's open weekends 12-6pm, Fridays 1-6, and by chance or appt. The show ends with a closing reception 3-6pm Sun Jan 7.
