I'd begun working on this painting in early spring, and finished it this month in time to take it to The Other Art Fair. (20"w x24"h x1.5"d acrylic on canvas, and it was the largest piece in my suitcases.) It is based on a photo I took last summer at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas, and I decided to paint it in a way that to me borders on abstraction. Instead of painting it more realistically, I broke it into pieces of color and shape. You basically understand what you're looking at, even without context, but it's a little simplified and flattened, with many details removed and some invented just to play with the spaces on the canvas. I did try to get that effect of bright hot sunlight that was such an intense part of my visit. ![]()
