SVA’s Makers Market is the pop-up product fair for alumni who make and sell their own products, is joining forces with Renegade Craft for a one-day showcase of alumni-made items.
As a School of Visual Arts grad (BFA 2002!?) I'll be at this fair in NYC on Sat Nov 17 with new merch including mugs, cards, prints and 2019 calendars, and some small original paintings.
From their 'holiday fair sneak preview' on sva.edu:
"Carefully observed and executed, the paintings and prints of Beacon, New York-based Erica Hauser (BFA 2002 Illustration) feature the flat colors and precision lettering of midcentury American roadside signage and scenes— coffee shops and diners, gas stations, motels— à la Eds Hopper and Ruscha."
I have a new show opening October 6-28, with lots of new and recent pieces from my stacks/stones series, alongside Mandy Kelso's mixed media work in encaustic, paint and wood.
Mandy wrote the following about my work, which was easier than writing it myself though I did make a few edits, mostly the words 'meditative', 'quiet' and 'hum' so don't hold her to those, nor me for that matter.
Erica Hauser’s new body of work explores chromatic and organic balance in a playful but delicate tension between object and canvas. While the color palettes evoke the same vintage simplicity of her earlier Americana works, this new abstract collection references more meditative forms found in nature, drawing upon her decades-long experience as a wood-stacker. The works retain the quiet feel of pristinely-stacked objects in space, yet hum with the energy of her striking use of color.

I will be participating in Newburgh OPEN Studios 2018 on September 29-30, with some new paintings and other stuff to look at (and buy at special open studio prices). Since my own studio is in my apartment on Liberty St, I'm sharing a bright street-level space with several other artists around the corner at 104 1/2 Ann St, next to Ann St Gallery.
NOS takes place on Sat Sept 29 and Sun Sept 30, 12-6pm each day.
Maps available starting at 10am both days at Newburgh Art Supply, 5 Grand St.
Updates and info on the NOS Facebook page and www.newburghopenstudios.org.
New collection of prints made this summer before I went to the art fair in Bristol. Now they're back in town and up for sale in my Etsy shop, have a look at them and some other new items.
My window installation at Meyers Olde Dutch in Beacon for Windows On Main Street 2018.
I imagined a window into the past, the kind of classic burger joint that this restaurant is a casual-modern interpretation of. Like a 1940s black & white photograph (or one of my paintings) made 3D. You’re inside my place looking out into the future or you’re inside MOD looking through the frame of the past to see the present. All salvaged and hand-painted materials.
The backdrop is plexiglas on the top half mounted to the wood frame, the bottom half is stretched canvas on this side, whiteboard on the other. On the wall is a framed print of my Frostick 5c painting, because the palette and theme match the rest, and because like the whole scene, it was inspired by photographs of Rudy Burckhardt.
On view through mid-September. 184 Main St. Grab a burger while there, they also have a fine vegetable burger and exceptionally good fries. Incidentally, all the components of this installation are for sale except the glass and the metal straw.
I'd begun working on this painting in early spring, and finished it this month in time to take it to The Other Art Fair. (20"w x24"h x1.5"d acrylic on canvas, and it was the largest piece in my suitcases.)
It is based on a photo I took last summer at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas, and I decided to paint it in a way that to me borders on abstraction. Instead of painting it more realistically, I broke it into pieces of color and shape. You basically understand what you're looking at, even without context, but it's a little simplified and flattened, with many details removed and some invented just to play with the spaces on the canvas. I did try to get that effect of bright hot sunlight that was such an intense part of my visit.
This will be my second Other Art Fair (I did Brooklyn in Nov 2017) and my first time showing my work internationally! For comp tickets use this link: bristol.theotherartfair.com/comp and then all you have to do is get to Bristol July 26-29. The Passenger Shed is an historic venue and there will be about 100 artists. Very excited. I will have smaller paintings at the fair itself and larger ones will be available on my Saatchi Art page.
This petite painting 'Signal Pink', acrylic on 4"x4" wood panel, will be included in an upcoming show on color, 'Spectrum Gestalt 5' at bG Gallery in Santa Monica CA. Opens June 16. Through July 8.
